Frequently Asked Questions
What is an endodontist?
An endodontist is a dental specialist with advanced training in diagnosing and treating problems inside the tooth, such as infections or injuries. Endodontists are experts in root canal treatment and procedures designed to save natural teeth.
What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside the tooth, disinfects the canals, and seals them to prevent reinfection. This procedure relieves pain and allows you to keep your natural tooth.
Will a root canal hurt?
With modern techniques and anesthesia, root canals are usually no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. Most patients are surprised at how easy the procedure feels.
Is this going to hurt after the procedure?
You may have mild soreness or tenderness for a few days, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients return to normal activities right away.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals are completed in one visit lasting 60–90 minutes. Some complex cases may require two appointments.
How long does a root canal last?
With proper care and a final restoration (usually a crown), a root canal-treated tooth can last as long as your natural teeth.
Do I need to take time off work? Can I go back to work the same day?
Most patients are able to return to work or school the same day. If your treatment is more involved, your endodontist may suggest rest.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
You can eat a light meal beforehand unless instructed otherwise. Continue taking your regular medications. Please bring a list of your medications, your insurance card, and any referral forms or X-rays/CBCT scans from your dentist. If possible wear comfortable clothing. Some patients will bring ear plugs or head phones, also.
Is a CBCT scan necessary and why?
We take CBCT (3D) scans for all patients because they give us the most accurate view of your teeth and surrounding bone. Unlike regular X-rays, a CBCT shows the tooth from every angle, which helps us find hidden canals, detect tiny fractures, and plan treatment with greater precision. This ensures we can do the best job possible and provide you with the highest quality care.
What is apical surgery?
Apical surgery (also called an apicoectomy) is a minor surgical procedure to remove infection at the tip of the root if a root canal alone is not sufficient. It allows us to save the tooth when other treatments aren’t enough.
Do you take my insurance?
We work with many PPO dental insurance plans and will help you maximize your benefits. Our team can provide an estimate before treatment.
Do you take Medi-Cal or Medicare?
Currently, we do not accept Medi-Cal. We do accept many Medicare dental plans.
Do you do payment plans?
Yes. We offer flexible payment options, including third-party financing, to make treatment more manageable.
Do I need to make a payment at my appointment?
Yes. Any co-payments or out-of-pocket portions are due at the time of service. We will review your estimate with you in advance so there are no surprises.
How much does a root canal cost?
Yes. Any co-payments or out-of-pocket portions are due at the time of service. We will review your estimate with you in advance so there are no surprises.Costs depend on the tooth’s location and complexity. A root canal is usually more cost-effective than extracting and replacing a tooth. We’ll provide a personalized estimate before treatment.

Our Customers Say

I was referred to Dr. Um by my dentist when he determined I needed a root canal. I was very anxious about having this procedure since this was my first root canal. Dr. Um understood my anxiety and provided me options on how to deal with it during the procedure. She did a wonderful job. I was completely relaxed during the procedure. I hope I don’t need any more root canals, but if I do, Dr. Um will be my Endodontist.

Dr. Elsherif and her team did an apicoectomy on my right #7 tooth. It took about 1.5 hours and during this time I was so comfortable and relaxed because Dr. Elsherif and her team were so confident and communicative so I did not feel I was having a surgery.
I appreciate their work and I am confident they saved my tooth which was badly damaged of an infection.

I was referred to Dr. Um early summer of 2022 by Dr. Shaygan Farzad. I could not have been luckier than this! Dr. Um’s office took me immediately, showed me excellent customer service at front desk, technology savvy, utmost professionalism, and extremely accommodating of my unusually tight scheduling needs. I was even given a different office address and took me 30 minutes longer to go the correct location, yet they still honored my appointment with a slight adjustment, because I had limited time in town. I am so grateful! The diagnosis process was comprehensive, and a 3-d x-ray was suggested in order to establish whether or not I really needed a root canal that was hard to see, due to the difficult position of my tooth. Thank goodness: the new x-ray showed an additional issue that we are on a long-term plan to address. We discussed all my options and possible treatments (I did need a root canal, after all) and soon I was on my way to healing. Dr. Um is a magician, the gentlest, softest touch I have ever experienced! I caught myself thinking “oh, what a pleasure,” something that you never associate with a root canal job, hahaha. You will be in great hands with Dr. Um, (and yes, her asking you to call her “Mary” does make a difference in the way you relate to her; she is the sweetest, most knowledgeable endodontist who has ever treated me!!!). Together with her referring dentist, Dr. Farzad, and their other colleague who treated me to stellar reviews, Dr. Samuel Ahdout (perio and implants), they have a fantastic team! Brava and thank you!!!

I was referred by my dentist to this practice for a root canal. Dr. Syamken was awesome. He asked if I wanted to duebthis procedure in 2 days or in one session. I said let’s do this today! After and hour and a half I was done and very happy with his work ethic. Never felt a darn thing the whole time. The next day no pain. I would highly recommend Dr. Syamken!

Do you know what I did last night? I slept. I slept because Dr. Um made all the pain go away. No one wants to get a root canal, but if I had to, Ivy Endodontics is exactly where I’d go. They were quick and made the experience as pleasant as possible.
Thank you all from Ivy Endodontics. … babies don’t sleep as good as I did.
